School Boundaries
Dear Wichita Parents,
I want to keep you informed about the Wichita Public Schools’ process to change school boundaries. The reason for the changes are prompted by the construction of six new schools made possible by the 2008 bond issue, expanded classroom capacity at others, as well as growth and changes in student residence patterns in our district. Five of the six new schools are scheduled to open in the fall of 2012.
With the addition of new schools, school boundaries will have to be changed and developed, along with creating new high school feeder patterns. New boundaries will also consider crowding at schools that have exceeded their capacity. The Board of Education has to study the costs of opening the new schools in light of significant reductions in school funding. All of these factors will require us to make changes to the bond issue plan.
On November 15, my Superintendent’s Boundary Focus Group saw the first “supposal” for elementary school boundary changes and potential school closures. It is important to note, this supposal is a suggestion, a starting point for discussion, NOT a final decision. The discussion by the group was thoughtful and active, and I appreciate the volunteer service of those who are members of the focus group. During our December focus group meeting we will review the first supposal for middle and high schools, followed by our January community meetings when the first review of the actual formal proposals will occur.
What parents can do:
Stay informed. We will provide updates as the process continues. Up-to-date information is also posted on the district Web site, www.boundary.usd259.org, or social media sites www.facebook.com/wichitapublicschools or Twitter: @wichitausd259. You may also comment on key questions and provide your input through the district’s Web site.
Provide feedback: There will be four public forums in January to allow parent to provide feedback on proposed boundary change maps. Time and location to be announced later:
Wednesday, January 11, 2012
Thursday, January 12, 2012
Wednesday, January 18, 2012
Thursday, January 19, 2012
We know this may be a time of uncertainty, but let me assure you that our staff will remain focused on providing a quality education for your child. Thank you for your continued support of the Wichita Public Schools.
Respectfully,
John Allison
